Nanette's Snack Haus, Maginhawa Street

Long before Maginhawa Street became a haven of foodies and casual intentional dining, there was Nanette's at # 84 selling burritos behind bars.

It wasn't part of my childhood nor my teens but my partner brought me there in 2013 as it brought him back to countless college memories. We were there when Maginhawa Street was being widened and the drainage was being fixed. It wasn't as comfortable as the streetside haunts so hip in the Poblacion area of Makati these days but hey, we were eating outdoors under the pleasant afternoon sun surrounded by trees.

And our food was made to order.

Nanette's version of the burrito was the one your homecook made. Perhaps your mom, you or me. Simple, tasty and filling. And definitely not commercial quality. And with its affordable price, I'm not surprised it forms part of the memory of many nearby university students.

While our burritos arrived ahead of time, we also ordered pork barbecue that was also grilled on site. With generous Filipino-style condiments, you're sure to have more. The eating experience is even made better with the fact that you can have streetfood comfortably seated unlike in UP and with the sari-sari store, you can have all the chicheria (junk food) you want!

Upon my return to Manila, we revisited Maginhawa again because there have been lots of new casual establishments in the area. Sadly, Nanette's is no longer around and has been replaced by a pizzeria. I wish eateries like Nanette's survive because they are institutions themselves, part of a culture,  memory of a certain generation. If other eateries flourish, why can't Nanette's too?
