VVG Bistro in Taipei

Right across VVG Something is VVG Bistro which Grace Wang opened much earlier. Despite confessing that she's got no restaurant experience prior to opening the bistro, she has certainly succeeded in creating an inviting space that meld the outdoors in.

Upon entry, you'll see the mixed furniture inside the sunroom surrounded by plants. Inside, you'll discover that you can choose from couches, long wooden tables for groups, and smaller round tables. VVG Bistro is much bigger than the bookstore and more bright and airy. It easily is a space to hang out with friends over a meal or dessert or just get lost in solitude reading a book. The interiors give a rustic shabby chic vibe in the French countryside. (Apparently Grace Wang was inspired by French Laundry's Thomas Keller too.)

We sat at a small table right by the open kitchen. Instead of a counter, a row of glass jars with tea and other ingredients divided the kitchen and the dining area. The jars would figure almost above one's head if seated but it was still a convenient vantage point to observe what was happening on the other side. And that's actually how I spied a lunch tray that apparently came from the VVG BB+B - a 3-suite boutique bed and breakfast above the bistro.

While planning how to spend the rest of our day in Taipei, KC and I shared a cheese board with some cold drinks. It looks seemingly sparse for two but it was actually just fine for a snack. (Definitely left room for the truffle fries at Eslite and grilled mushrooms at W Hotel we had afterwards). I wouldn't say it's a must order but it was fine given that we weren't in Europe to expect fine cheeses. Since I want to return to the bookshop next time in Taipei, I wouldn't say no to revisiting the bistro too! But perhaps I will prioritize VVG Thinking in Huashan that opened in late 2012 next time because it's solely focused on books and food.
